In the ever-evolving world of medical aesthetics, compassion, skill, and integrity remain the true hallmarks of excellence. Few embody these qualities more gracefully than Yulia Culley, a highly respected nurse practitioner and the driving force behind Novello Aesthetics.
Yulia’s journey into aesthetics was born not from glamour, but from experience — one that ignited a deep commitment to patient safety, ethical practice, and continuous learning. Today, she stands as a trusted voice in the industry, known for her holistic approach and dedication to empowering patients through education and care.
In this exclusive interview with Safety in Beauty Editor, Antonia Mariconda, Yulia opens up about her personal journey, the values that shape her practice, and the philosophy that makes Novello Aesthetics such a special place for patients seeking confidence and authentic results.
Yulia, what inspired you to become a nurse practitioner, and what led you into the world of aesthetics?
My journey into aesthetics was quite unexpected. I was considering leaving nursing to raise a young family and find more family-friendly working hours, as hospital shifts were becoming challenging. While pursuing an MSc in Computing and visiting family abroad, a friend introduced me to a clinic she attended. Unfortunately, my first experience with dermal fillers was far from glamorous — I was left with swollen, “sausage-like” nasolabial folds, the Tyndall effect, and even an infection on one side. When I returned to the practitioner, she simply called it “unlucky” and offered no further support.
It was an arduous task to find someone in the UK who could help. Eventually, I met an incredible nurse practitioner who not only treated me but showed me what true care looks like. That experience ignited my passion for medical aesthetics.
How does your background in nursing influence the way you treat patients in aesthetics today?
Absolutely — my nursing background is at the core of how I practice. I’ve never left the NHS completely, and I still work there in a reduced capacity. The skills are deeply transferable, and my experience across various clinical settings is invaluable.
As nurses, we’re accountable and governed by regulatory bodies, no matter our specialty. My time in A&E still helps me manage emergencies in the clinic, though rare. My work in GP practices and PCN taught me a holistic approach to consultations, assessments, and effective communication with multidisciplinary team. This is vital when referring patients or considering factors like ongoing investigations, treatments, vaccinations, and travel plans.
I’m very particular about record-keeping and patient safety. I’ve also learned from the gaps in the wider healthcare system — we actively avoid repeating those mistakes in our clinic. Saying “yes” or “no” to procedures comes with great responsibility, and I always consider the bigger picture of the patient’s health and life circumstances.
Was there a pivotal moment when you knew aesthetics was your true calling?
Yes — after my negative filler experience, I attended a Royal College of Nursing Aesthetics Forum, which I discovered through the Nursing Standard journal. Back then, it was one of the few resources in aesthetics.
Meeting passionate nurses and educators there inspired me. I took my first course soon after, and that was the beginning of my journey. I knew this was my professional calling. I promised myself I’d support patients through their journeys with compassion and honesty. I’ve always loved learning, and aesthetics offers endless growth — that continuous learning keeps me excited every day.
Never stop learning. Never stop developing. That was my moment.
Inside Novello AestheticsCan you tell us more about Novello Aesthetics — what sets your clinic apart?
We’re fortunate to have many high-quality clinics locally and nationally, but I believe every clinic has its own unique charm. At Novello Skin, we never push a hard sell — ever. We focus on listening, allowing time for consultations, thoughtful decision-making, and attentive aftercare.
I’d like to believe our patients choose us because they feel genuinely safe and supported. We build relationships based on trust, respect, and loyalty. We’re a small, close-knit Novello Skin “family,” and we take pride in everything we do — whether that’s celebrating milestones with our patients or supporting them through tough times.
We also have a strong referral network with local GPs, dermatologists, nutritionists, and counselling services — ensuring our patients get the help they need beyond our scope. We’re CQC-registered and have access to a lab, which adds another layer of safety and professionalism.
Recently, we moved to a new location that feels very much a part of the local trader community. Every year, we choose a local charity to support and participate in the Suffolk Sunday Markets. We love keeping our doors open to welcome visitors on market days!
What kind of experience do you want every patient to have when they walk through your doors?
I want every patient to feel comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely cared for. It can be daunting to book a first-time appointment, and I always think: “How would I like to be treated if I were the patient?”
Hearing feedback about how friendly and supportive our team is means the world to us.
How do you ensure patient safety is always the top priority?
As a medical clinic, patient safety is non-negotiable. We’re registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Save Face. We hold regular team meetings and audits to review and reflect on our practices.
Informed consent is at the heart of every treatment — sometimes that means saying “no” to a patient if something isn’t right for them. My meticulous record-keeping and emphasis on patient education help reinforce our safe, ethical approach.
What are the most popular treatments you’re currently performing — and why are they trending?
Skin regenerative treatments like polynucleotides, skin boosters, microneedling, RF, and exosomes are on the rise. They offer natural improvements and long-term benefits.
At the same time, classic treatments like muscle-relaxing injections remain the most common starting point. They often serve as an entry into the world of skin health. Recently, peri-ocular rejuvenation using CO2 laser combined with polynucleotides has also gained popularity.
Are there any innovations in aesthetics you’re especially excited about?
Definitely — the integration of functional medicine and a holistic approach excites me. It’s no longer just about smoothing lines or adding volume; it’s about supporting overall health and improving the longevity of skin through internal wellness.
Education in dermatology and dermoscopy is also growing, which helps practitioners diagnose skin cancers and inflammatory conditions earlier. We’re in a powerful position to educate patients and positively influence their lifestyles.
What’s your approach to achieving natural results that enhance — not change — someone’s appearance?
Understanding anatomy, physiology, and even mental health is key. We take a gradual, combined approach to treatments, always rooted in a clear treatment plan.
It’s important to explore why patients are seeking treatment and ensure their choices are informed and aligned with their well-being. I firmly believe in saying “no” when necessary — listening to your professional instincts is crucial. Educating patients empowers them to make the best decisions for themselves.
How do you manage patient expectations, especially in the age of filters and unrealistic beauty standards?
I never perform treatments on the same day as a consultation. Instead, I use that time to understand the patient’s motivations, expectations, and timeline.
I use diagrams, patient photos, and animations to explain facial anatomy and highlight their natural features — not compare them to filtered images. It’s often surprising how many people struggle to say what they like about themselves. Helping them see their own beauty is part of the process.
What advice would you give to someone considering their first aesthetic treatment?
Do your research and don’t rush. Be honest about your medical history and expectations. Ask what products are being used, where they’re sourced, and what aftercare and support will be available.
Make sure your practitioner is qualified, insured, and experienced. And if something goes wrong — know how to get help.
How do you feel about current UK regulations around aesthetic treatments? What changes would you like to see?
Regulations in the UK are still not where they should be. While we’re fortunate to have many reputable professionals working tirelessly to raise safety standards, more support is needed from both the government and insurance companies.
The upcoming licensing scheme is a step in the right direction and, hopefully, will bring about positive change — but it will take time to implement and enforce effectively. Until then, we can only speculate on how it will unfold. What’s clear is that stronger regulation is essential to protect the public and ensure a higher, more consistent standard of care across the industry.
I would also like to see a clearer educational and practical pathway for acquiring medical aesthetics qualifications. In every other area of medicine, there is a defined scope of competencies that determines the next level of professional development and autonomy. We should adopt a similar approach in medical aesthetics — ensuring that practitioners progress in a structured, safe, and accountable way.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing a transformation — not just physically, but emotionally. Watching patients grow in confidence is incredibly rewarding.
Also, the opportunity for continuous learning keeps me passionate. And yes, being my own boss has its perks (depending on the day!). There’s flexibility, but also a lot of responsibility. If it were easy, everyone would do it!
How do you balance running a clinic with your own wellbeing?
I’m still learning! I used to work evenings and weekends constantly. Now, I focus on balance by having a small but reliable team and alternating my schedule.
Spending quality time with my family is a priority — we travel and do things together to recharge. I also enjoy running — it helps me reset my mind and has a hugely positive impact on my mental health. That time to disconnect and move my body really helps me stay focused, calm, and present both at work and at home.
