Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, liposculpture or suction-assisted lipectomy, is an operation in which excess fat is removed from under your skin through thin blunt metal tubes called cannulaes. These localised fat deposits may be formed virtually anywhere on the body but are more common on the abdomen, hips, flanks, inner and outer thighs, knees and chin.

Types of liposuction available

Tumescent liposuction is performed under local anaesthetic. A large amount of an anaesthetic solution containing lidocaine and epinephrine is injected into the fatty tissue before traditional liposuction is done.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses ultrasound to liquify the fat, making it easier to remove. It is particularly helpful in removing fat from the upper abdomen, sides, and back.

Laser-assisted liposuction uses low-energy waves to liquify the fat, which is removed through a small cannula.

Brands of liposuction available

Liposonix (Solta)
Liposonix ultrasound energy is focused in the subcutaneous fat layer beneath the skin to remove unwanted fat cells around the waist.

Smartlipo (Cynosure)
Smartlipo is the industry’s leading laser-assisted lipolysis system designed to disrupt fat cells and coagulate tissue, resulting in tissue retraction.1 It’s ideal for treating localized fat deposits on the face and body.

VASERlipo (Solta Medical)
During the procedure, ultrasound energy breaks up fatty tissue while leaving other tissues untouched. By selectively emulsifying fat cells before removal, the VASERlipo System allows optimal control and reduces aspiration time and physician tiredness.
